Steffie Lerch (born Stephanie Krausz March 10, 1905 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ; died June 3, 1996 in New York ) was an Austro-Hungarian graphic artist .

Life

Stefanie Krauss was a daughter of the Jewish historian Samuel Krauss and Irene Tedesco, one brother was the psychiatrist Stephen Krauss . Her family moved to Vienna in 1906 , where she grew up, completed her school education and finally studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . After graduating, she worked in the advertising industry. In 1933 she married the painter Franz Lerch and took him on a wedding and study trip to Sicily . Her husband Franz used her as a model quite often , so that some portraits are assumed to have been depicted on them. There is also a painting in the Belvedere Museum in Vienna in which the couple can be seen together. When Austria was annexed to Germany in 1938, Steffie's Jewish origins forced the couple to emigrate . First they fled to England and then to New York in the USA . There she began to work again as a graphic artist in advertising, designed greeting cards and was also successful as an illustrator of children's books.
