Franz Lerch (born August 30, 1895 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † January 25, 1977 in New York ) was an Austrian painter and representative of the New Objectivity .

Life

Franz Lerch, son of a bookbinder of the same name, and his wife Eleonore, née Soukup, attended the commercial academy after finishing school. At first he worked in the administration of a construction company. Only after his military service did he study from 1918 to 1926 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Alois Delug , Josef Jungwirth and Karl Sterrer . In 1927 he became a member of the artists' association Hagenbund and remained so until it was dissolved by the National Socialists in 1938 . He also joined the Vienna Secession . In 1927 Lerch went on study trips to Paris and the Netherlands . The win of numerous prizes and the purchase of his works by Austrian museums enabled him to make a living from his profession from 1931. In 1933 he married Stephanie Krausz , the daughter of Samuel Krauss, a well-known Jewish scholar, and took her on a wedding and study trip to Sicily . When Austria was annexed to Germany in 1938, the couple were forced to emigrate to New York due to their wife's Jewish origins , where they worked for the Printex designer company until 1973. He received American citizenship in 1944. Before fleeing to the USA via Great Britain, he destroyed all of his unsold works.

In the USA he could no longer make a living from painting and only did it in his free time.

Lerch is one of the main representatives of the New Objectivity in Austria.

"In its austerity and severity, Lerch's work is reminiscent of that of Carl Hofer , whom he met in 1928. Richer colors, greater spatial depth and greater plasticity, however, distinguish Lerch's work from Hofer's works. In his files , portraits and landscapes , Lerch represents a position between Expressionism and New Objectivity, which he turned into the lyrical through the painterly inclusion of an organic liveliness within the formal rigor . Works by him can be found in the following museums and collections:

Some of his works are listed in the Lost Art database of the Magdeburg coordination office .

Awards

He received in 1925, 1931, 1932 a. 1936 the State Prize, 1931 the City of Vienna Prize.
