Steiger was an American tractor manufacturer that is now part of CNH Global .

history

Steiger was founded in the 1950s by brothers Douglas and Maurice Steiger, two farmers in Thief River Falls , Minnesota who needed a reliable, high-performance 4WD tractor. The Steigers first built a tractor in their workshop for their own use, then another and sold it to a neighbor in 1958.

Demand grew, and soon the brothers began manufacturing the tractor in larger quantities at a location near Thief River Falls. From the start, the Steigers painted their tractors an almost neon light green, as opposed to the muted yellow, green, blue, red, and orange hues used by most other manufacturers. Steiger Farms' tractor division moved to Fargo , North Dakota , in 1969 .

Under CEO Eugene Dahl (former Vice President for Purchasing at Melroe Company ), she was one of the world's most successful mass manufacturers of all-wheel-drive tractors. In the 1970s, International Harvester acquired a 30 percent stake in the company. This share was sold on to Deutz-Fahr in 1982 .

Case IH parent company Tenneco acquired Steiger in 1986 and the Steiger family's lime green was replaced by Case IH's red. The Steiger name disappeared for a while, but was reintroduced into Case IH's range as the designation for the flagship line of all-wheel-drive tractors, but they have also been sold as New Holland since Case IH merged with New Holland to form CNH Global . The current (2009) models are sold as Case STX Steiger with outputs from 150 to over 370 kW, most are also available as Quadtrac (tape drives).

Steiger also built tractors for various other tractor manufacturers and dealers, for example International Harvester, Ford or Allis-Chalmers . Steiger licensed its tractors to RÁBA (Hungary), who built RÁBA and RÁBA-Steiger tractors, and Vandel (France), who built the tractors under their own name.

Former Steiger President Jack Johnson later founded Titan Tractors in Fargo to rebuild and retrofit old Steigers. American Tractors (AmTrac), in England, is currently building or retrofitting old Steigers.
