Steimke is a district of the municipality Obernholz , Gifhorn district in Lower Saxony in the southern part of the Lüneburg Heath , near the border with Saxony-Anhalt, and has 229 inhabitants.

Geographical location
Steimke is located about 30 km south of the city of Uelzen , but administratively belongs to the Gifhorn district . The place is located between the Südheide Nature Park and the Elbufer-Drawehn Nature Park . Steimke is part of the Obernholz community and is located in the center of the community. The closest medium- sized centers are Gifhorn , Celle and Uelzen.
Place name
In the Middle Ages, a stone-set spring rose in Steimke, which may have led to the name being given. The High German word Steinbach corresponds to the Low German word Steenbeeke , from which today's place name Steimke developed.
history
The oldest known documentary mention of Steimke ( Stembeke ) is in the list of goods from 1196/97 of the Braunschweig Abbey of Sankt Cyriakus .
Stone cross of the Junker Georg von Blankenburg
During the ride to the pilgrimage chapel in Steimke, the Junker Georg von Blankenburg from Steinhorst is said to have had a fatal accident by falling from his horse. His father placed a stone cross in memory of this event in 1244 and also donated the church in Steinhorst. The equestrian cross still stands in the middle of the village.
school
The village school in Steimke existed from 1770 to 1965. Before the school was founded, the students were taught by the residents of the village. Since 1959, lessons have been held in Hankensbüttel from the 5th grade onwards. In 1964, school operations were completely relocated to Hankensbüttel.
