history
The name Steinbach first appears in 1773. Old place names were: Stampach, Stanpakk, Stanpack and Steinpoch. Individual farmsteads like the old mill were first mentioned in 1608.
In 1774 a chapel for 25 people was built. It is dedicated to St. Anthony . There was only service on his name day, June 13th. The current branch church was built in 1896 and belongs to the Pilgersdorf parish, but has been looked after by the Kogl parish for several years.
In 1813 the place was hit by a devastating flood. Many houses were washed under and collapsed. A large stone that the water carried right up to the old fire station is a reminder of this tremendous natural event.
In 1881 the community built a school building with a classroom. A modern school building was built between 1962 and 1964.
At the time of the Hungarian rule Steinbach was called "Köpatak". Pilgersdorf was called "Pörgöleny". Only two kilometers away, on the Lower Austrian border, two (replanted) linden trees are a reminder of the fighting with Hungarian soldiers on September 5, 1921 , when the then young Austrian armed forces and the newly established gendarmerie succeeded in repelling the Hungarians who kept this area with Hungary wanted to. The old border between Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary ran in Steinbach .
