Eckartsberg quarry from the north bank |
The Eckartsberg quarry is a former basalt quarry on Schleekretscham Eckartsberg in the municipality of Mittelherwigsdorf not far from the city of Zittau .
Around 1900 basalt began to be extracted here for road construction. The crumbly rock proved to be of limited use, because it was sunburner basalt that was unsuitable as paving material and unsuitable for gravel extraction . The mining was then stopped and the quarry was flooded.
Diving in the quarry
The Eckartsberg quarry serves as a body of water for divers , as it has large stocks of fish, plants and mussels. Special attractions are a car wreck from 1945 and an underwater station from 1999.
The quarry is used by both a diving school and the diving club Zittau eV. A diving base with a filling station is available. Registration or approval for diving is required.
Flora and fauna
The lake offers great fishing wealth of mirrors - and leather carp , perch , moderlieschen , roach and ide and crucian carp . Occasionally pike , catfish and eels can be found , but also American crayfish . In the vicinity of the bank there are mainly thousand leaves , buttercups and pondweed plants .
