Johan Browall , Latinized Johan Browallius (born August 30, 1707 in Västerås , † July 25, 1755 in Åbo ) was a Swedish doctor , botanist , politician and bishop .

Live and act

Johan Browall was the son of the professor Anders Browall (1685-1720) and his wife Katarina Sigtunius. After the death of his father he went to Uppsala and enrolled at Uppsala University on February 18, 1720 . He studied a. a. with Eric Alstrin (1683–1762) and Laurentius Arrhenius (1680–1730). In 1731 he became a master of philosophy under Anders Grönvall (1671–1758) .

In Falun he was the teacher of the sons of Nils Reuterholm (1676–1756), who was the governor of Dalarna Province . Here he also met Carl von Linné , who spent the turn of the year 1732/33 at the invitation of his friend Claes Sohlberg (1711–1773) in Falun.

In 1737 Browall became professor of natural history at the Åbo Academy . Numerous works in the fields of botany, chemistry, physics and mineralogy were carried out under his direction. One of his students wrote, for example, about the genus Convallaria ( De Convallariae species, vulgo Lilium Convallium dicta ), another dealt with the pollination processes in plants ( Harmonia fructificationis plantarum cum generatione animalium ).

In the work Examen Epicriseos published in 1739, he defended Linnaeus' sexual system of plants against the accusations made by Johann Georg Siegesbeck .

In 1746 Johan Browall became professor of theology and provost at Åbo Cathedral . Three years later, in 1749, he was installed there as bishop .

Browall was married to Elisabet (née Ehrenholm, 1707–1779) since February 12, 1738. She was the daughter of the government archivist and budget secretary Johann Christian Kippius von Ehrenholm (born around 1663, Johan Kristoffer Kippius, Adlad Ehrenholm) from Bremen-Verden . The couple had a daughter Elisabeth Browallius, who later married Johan Gadolin, their son was Johan Gadolin .

Honor taxon

Carl von Linné named the genus Browallia of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) in his honor .
