Rauen quarry (Witten)

The Rauen quarry is a former quarry in the Gedern district of Witten . It cuts the Wartenberg on the northern flank of the Kirchhörde r saddle . The quarry is located in the Ruhr valley within the Witten main trough. The quarry has been part of the Ruhr Area Geopark since 2006 .

The outcrop shows an approximately 200 meter thick profile from the Sprockhövel Formation ( Namurium C ) of the Pennsylvania ( Silesium ). On the upper floor of the quarry you can find the sequence of layers from the Gottessegen seam to the water bank .

The Rauen quarry has been a ground monument since 2015 . Because of its natural history , regional studies and geological significance, rarity and uniqueness, he is also a natural monument excellent.

The Rauen quarry has belonged to cave explorer Stefan Voigt since 2017 .
