Stefan Voigt (cave explorer)

Stefan Voigt (born July 2, 1963 in Schwelm ) is a German speleologist , conservationist and entrepreneur.

Life

Voigt began an apprenticeship as a landscape gardener in 1980, and in 1989 he passed his master craftsman examination in gardening and landscaping. Since 1996 he has held the office of landscape guardian of the Ennepe-Ruhr district for the Ennepetal area . In 1998 Voigt started his own business in gardening and landscaping. Since 1999 the cave guides of the Klutert cave have been examined by him . In 2002 Stefan Voigt married his wife Ute, with whom he has two children.

Voigt has been a member of the landscape advisory board since 2009 and, since renaming, the nature conservation advisory board of the Ennepe-Ruhr district. In 2012 he became a member of the advisory board of the Geopark Ruhrgebiet. He still fills this position today and represents the interests of karst and cave research.

In 2011 Voigt received the German Landscape Conservation Award . On July 22, 2018, Stefan Voigt received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his decades of achievements in cave research and nature conservation. On May 12, 2018, Voigt received the Dr. Benno Wolf Prize from the Association of German Cave and Karst Researchers (VdHK) , which honors special achievements in cave research.

Speleological work

He was already exploring the caves in Ennepetal in his youth. In 1980 Voigt joined the Kluterthöhle working group . In the same year he dived through a nasal siphon with Harald Gallinnis in the Klutert cave and discovered 30 m of new territory behind it. In 1981 Voigt discovered his first large cave, the Holthauser Bach cave in Hagen . At the same time, a first contract for a cave and the closure of the object were achieved here. In 1983 he found the Heilenbeck cave behind a hole the size of a fist, through which 4 km of caves could be explored. Also in 1983 Voigt became a member of the board of directors of the Kluterthöhle working group in the Ennepetal tourist office. The following year the Kluterthöhle working group was founded as a registered association , which Voigt represented as deputy chairman from 1985; since 1987 he has been the club's chairman.

Together with Matthias Eggermann, Voigt carried out an expedition to the Middle East . In the winter of 1985 he traveled to Syria and explored caves there. Near the Syrian city of Ragga, the Cater Magara Cave has been explored over a length of over 3 km. During later expeditions with the club members, the cave was over 7 km long and became the longest gypsum cave in the Middle East. In addition to the Cater Magara Cave, four other large caves were discovered.

With the Kluterthöhle working group, Voigt also found a research area in the northern Limestone Alps . In the Stone Sea around the Schneiber mountain , he researched together with his comrades and discovered, explored and mapped over 15 km of new cave passages, including six large caves and two bear caves. Another field of activity was speleogenesis, which Voigt dealt with. In 1986, the Ennepetal City Council appointed the Kluterthöhle e. V. to the carrier of public interests.

In 1986 Voigt discovered an open continuation at the end of the only 120 m long Simon Cave near Warstein together with club mates. Behind it was 700 m of new land with a large stalactite hall. A year later, negotiations began with the city of Hagen, which wanted to displace the Kluterthöhle working group from the caves in the city area. Thanks to Voigt's commitment, a contract was drawn up at this point, which is known today among speleologists as the “Ennepetal Model”. As part of this model, the city of Hagen transferred the tasks of cave research and cave protection to the Kluterthöhle working group. This was unique in Germany. In the following years this model was also adopted by other cave research associations. With the formulated contract and the experience from the negotiations, Voigt succeeded in concluding the Ennepetal model, modified in each case, with other cities and districts.

In 1990 Voigt and the Kluterthöhle working group in Hagen discovered the Martinshöhle . In the same year he uncovered the continuation in the Timpenhöhle and discovered over 700 m of new territory. In the following year Voigt succeeded in signing a contract with the city of Engelskirchen to take over the Kallenloch . The cave had been filled with rubbish for decades. The Kluterthöhle working group disposed of over 100 m³ of garbage and rubbish from the cave. In 1992 the cave explorers around Voigt succeeded in discovering an 800 m long labyrinth in the Wuppertal Hardthöhle . In 1996 Voigt took part in the first German Cambodia expedition. 11.6 km of cave passages and a temple from the 6th century were discovered. In 1997, after a few hours of excavation, the more than 800 m long Altenberg cave was rediscovered. In 1998 he went to the Banat Mountains with a Romanian association for caving .

When revising the Hohenlimburg Geological Sheet , he took over the description of the caves on the western half of the map sheet. In 1998 it was possible to clear a fall in a natural shaft in a construction pit in Gummersbach . Voigt and his comrades found the right way, and in one fell swoop, over 600 m of new territory and the most beautiful stalactite cave in the Bergisches Land were discovered: the Rosper cave . In 2000 the cave explorers working with Voigt succeeded in discovering a cave in a hollow in the Wuppertal Karst. After a short dig, they came to the 700 m long Ascension Cave . Not far from the Assumption Sponsor Cave, another cave he discovered was broken open.

In 2008, Andreas Wolf, Günter Stautz and Stefan Voigt explored the Al-Kittan Cave in Oman for the Institute for Karst and Speleology . It was documented, measured and new territory was explored. In 2009, fist-sized holes were found during construction work at the grammar school in Ennepetal. In the following period he explored almost 500 m of new territory in the Ebbinghauser Höhle with the Kluterthöhle working group and was able to save the property despite the development. In 2010, the 50th association conference of German cave and karst researchers was organized by the cave association. Voigt's relationships were important for the organization, as well as for the lectures with a focus on cave protection. In addition, he persuaded the city of Ennepetal to use a council resolution for cave and karst research.

In 2011 Voigt was able to prevent a planned industrial area through an expert opinion on the Linderhauser Mulde in Wuppertal . In Geological Map 4911 Gummersbach , published in 2013, Voigt mapped the calcareous lenses and wrote the chapter on karstification with Volker Wrede . In 2014 Voigt was a member of the international Laos expedition to the province of Xam Neva . In addition to surveying work, there was also some new territory to explore. A sinkhole on the slope of the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway line at the Martfeld house level was investigated by Voigt's cave researchers. A 19 m long cave was found that contains not only a CO2 lake but also numerous minerals. Due to its location, it was named Schwelmer Castle Cave .

The Voigts company bought 35 hectares with 26 caves. Voigt was given two pieces of land for nature conservation, including a strong karst spring . During cleaning work in the Klutert cave, the cave researchers working with Stefan Voigt found a previously unknown paleozoic coral reef , one of the best-preserved paleozoic reefs in the world. From 2015 to 2017 the Kluterthöhle was completely renovated with the support of the NRW Foundation and the operation of Voigt.

In the years after the discovery, Voigt therefore planned to make the Klutertberg caves a national monument. He obtained many expert opinions, held discussions and, after careful preparation, submitted the relevant application to designate the Klutert cave as a national natural monument. The city of Ennepetal and the non-profit working group Kluterthöhle became co-applicants. The then State Environment Minister Johannes Remmel received the positive decision on the application. In the months that followed, Voigt helped formulate the regulation.
