Steinfurt Rose Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Steinfurth Rose Festival is a four-day folk festival in the rose village of Steinfurth in the Wetterau district in Hesse , which is celebrated every two years in July on a weekend (Friday to Monday). The festival is organized by the magistrate of the city Bad Nauheim .

The 45th Rose Festival took place from July 15 to 18, 2016 and was attended by around 30,000 people. The 46th Rose Festival will take place from July 13th to 16th, 2018.

history

The beginnings of the rose festival go back to 1911. At that time, local rose gardeners began to present their cultivated roses in exhibitions and to make them accessible to a broader public, who actively accepted the offer. The first rose flower show took place in the Darmstädter Hof restaurant , which has now given way to a flower shop. Since 1926 the rose show has been taking place in the Rosensaal, a hall specially built for this purpose.

At the suggestion of the American occupation authorities, folk festivals were held in numerous regions in 1949 after the Second World War - including the first official rose festival in Steinfurth. Hedwig Metzler drove in the mayor's open car during the Rose Parade, which was held for the first time, and was described by many guests in the audience as the "Queen of the Roses". This idea was already implemented at the next Rose Festival in 1950 and Metzler became the first Steinfurt Rose Queen. From 1951, in the run-up to the Rose Festival, young women from Steinfurth were sought who, after a public election by the entire village, would succeed them for one year. In the course of time this public election was abolished, and since then the candidates for the office of the Rose Queen have been proposed directly to a committee.

The Rose Festival was celebrated every year until 1970. As the organization and structure have become increasingly complex over time, the festival has only been held every two years (in even years) since 1970. Since 1978 the Steinfurth Rosenring has been awarded to people who have “made special contributions to roses”.

In order to counteract the decline in visitor numbers from 2002 onwards, the organizers have made numerous changes from the Rose Festival 2008, which should focus the festival more on the rose. In 2008, in addition to the rose devotion , the rose market was introduced, which at that time was still stretching across the festival area and thus taking up space for other showmen and rides. Since 2012, the rose market has been taking place completely away from the fairground in the side streets to the Steinfurth rose museum.

Rose show

As part of the rose festival, the Steinfurth rose growers present a large number of new and popular varieties and exhibit them in specially designed arrangements. Since the Rose Festival 2010, the rose show has been designed and planned by the Grünberger Bildungszentrum für Floristik . For this purpose, both the exhibition hall and the outdoor area are decorated with a specific motto for each rose festival. A variety of rose species are also displayed on the gallery of the hall.

On July 13, 2012, at the suggestion of a registrar from the city of Bad Nauheim, a wedding ceremony was carried out for the first time and once in the ambience of the rose show, as the 2012 topic was “bridal jewelry” and the bride was the Steinfurt granddaughter of a rose grower.

Rose queen

At the opening of the festival, the Steinfurt rose queen gives a speech next to the mayor and then opens the rose show in the rose hall. Together with her two rose princesses, she represents Steinfurth and the city of Bad Nauheim at a large number of festivals in and around the country during the Rose Festival and her two-year reign.

Traditionally, the enthronement of the rose queen takes place in the spring of the rose festival year. After discussions with the candidates for the office proposed by a committee, the committee finally determines the rose queen.

The rose queen for 2018 and 2019 is Yaren Dalli .

Rose Parade

Steinfurther Rosenfest - motif wagon with approx. 60,000 rose petals

The traditional highlight of the event is the rose parade, a parade in which large motif floats (the so-called "rose splendor floats") made from several hundred thousand rose petals can be seen. The parade takes place on the Sunday of the festival weekend at 2 p.m. and runs through a large part of the Steinfurth streets.

The local associations are responsible for designing and building the wagons, who start planning and implementing their ideas many months before the festival and invest great efforts in the detailed execution of the huge flower arrangements. The rose blossoms, which can only be kept for a few hours, are picked immediately before the festival, individually attached to wire pins and inserted by hand into the moss-covered wooden structures of the motif wagons by numerous helpers the night before the parade. Groups of feet from local associations run between the individual rose floats and sometimes perform music, dance or other tricks. In addition, representatives of other festivals such as the rose queen from Bad Langensalza or the Hessentag couple are often represented in the parade . The 2016 Rose Parade consisted of 65 items, eight of which were rose floats and the rose queen's float.

The parade was broadcast by Hessischer Rundfunk on hr-fernsehen until 2006 and moderated by Michaele Scherenberg and Karl-Heinz Stier . The transmission came under criticism in particular from the organizer of the parade, since the parade had to be stopped several times because of interviews with the rose queen and other participants. This caused some visitors to leave the event early.

In the run-up to the Rose Festival in 2014, TÜV Hessen had found all cars intended for participation in the parade to be unfit to drive. He referred to the Second Ordinance on Exceptions to Road Traffic Regulations of February 28, 1989, which regulates the special features of equipment and the operation of vehicles for use at traditional events. The organizers of the Rose Parade and the individual Steinfurth clubs have finally bought new wagons in different ways after a series of alternatives rejected by the TÜV and the idea of a so-called standing parade in the courtyards along the parade route.

Contrary to the previous tradition that only Steinfurth clubs build ornate floats for the Rose Parade and decorate them with roses, a group of private people took part in the construction of a float for the first time in 2016.

future

The future of the rose festival is not guaranteed in view of the falling number of rose businesses in Steinfurth. For the Rose Festival 2018, some changes were expected in advance, also with regard to the anniversary of “150 Years of Steinfurther Roses” and discussed and developed by a group of Steinfurther citizens, the “Future Workshop”. Thought was also given to abandoning the rose tent and the fairground. For example, the rose show should make room for music events and move to the exhibition rooms of a cultivation company. Even if the number of rose businesses continues to decline, no further changes have been made to the festival for the anniversary apart from the elimination of parking fees.
