The STEMA Metalleichtbau GmbH is a German manufacturer for car trailer and vehicle transport solutions based in Grossenhain . The company, founded in 1951 as VEB Stema Ofenbau, has been one of the largest car trailer manufacturers in Germany since 1997 and produces around 40,000 car trailers annually with its almost 165 employees. In 2009 the 1 millionth trailer was produced for worldwide sales.

history

The establishment of the company was made in 1951 as a state-owned enterprise (VEB) Stema furnace construction , where the name is an abbreviation of St ANZ and Ema lierwerk stood. The company's headquarters were in Großenhain Castle , where there were already industrial factories in the 19th century. Production initially comprised washing boiler ovens (100 liter nominal capacity) with coal heating.

In 1967 the company, which had limited growth, moved to its current location in Riesaer Straße in the Großraschütz district .

As part of the state-ordered consumer goods production to increase the level of supply for the population, the first car trailers were built in 1969. In the following year, the trailer production went into series and VEB Stema became the main manufacturer of the HP series ("flatbed trailer"). From 1974 there were exports of car trailers, also to the non-socialist economic area , in order to collect foreign currency .

Annual production in 1985 was 17,300 car trailers. The company received gold medals for its products at the Leipzig trade fairs that take place twice a year .

In the course of the political turnaround and the change in the economic system, VEB Stanz- und Emaillierwerk Grossenhain became a company managed in trust in 1990 , which was privatized on April 4, 1991 after the reunification of Germany .

In 1997, the company achieved a 30 percent share of the car trailer market in Germany. In the following year, Stema was certified for the first time in accordance with the quality management standard ISO 9001 . In 2003 the company was the winner of the “ Oskar für den Mittelstand ” award . In 2005, Stema brought itself up to date with more efficient turret punching machines.

The product portfolio expanded in 2006 to include the Blue Man range of camping trailers (with a lockable cover), the Green Keeper (with a tailgate that can be used as a loading ramp) and vehicle transporters. In the following year, three-way tippers were launched and in 2008 the Systema product range was presented, a platform system for one and two-axle trailers with different bodies and a total weight of 750 to 3500 kg, which went into series production in 2010. Also in 2008, Stema received a Dekra certificate for all Stema vehicle parts.

Forty years after starting trailer production, the company had its 1 millionth trailer in 2009. The head of the Federal Chancellery, Federal Minister Thomas de Maizière , presented the donated copy to the Albert Schweitzer Children's Village in Moritzburg .

After visiting the Caravan Salon trade fair , the Dutch showmaster Harry Wijnvoord was won over as a brand ambassador for the World of Motorbike (WOM) trailer for one year in 2015 , a fully hydraulically lowerable motorcycle transporter on which Wijnvoord carries a Fiat 500 behind his caravan.

In 2016, Stema presented a design study for the retro trailer HP 450 . It takes up the appearance of the HP 450 manufactured from 1970 to 1989 , but has larger dimensions and a total weight increased to 750 kg.

In addition to the boat transport trailers, Stema introduced the “red snapper cruiser” brand in 2017, with a foldable compact boat for up to four people being loaded onto a short single-axle trailer. The folding boat made in Poland was designed to match the Stema Cruiser 750, which gave it a double function as a boat transport trailer and a normal car trailer.
