Sten Carl Bielke

Sten Carl Bielke (born March 14, 1709 in Stockholm , † July 13, 1753 in Adelsö församling , Stockholms län ) was a Swedish court judge, chamberlain, baron and co-founder of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences from the noble Bielke family .

Life

Bielke was the son of Baron Ture Stensson Bielke and his wife Ursula Kristina (née Törne). Since his father died early, he was taken in by a relative and taught in various European languages. After a trip abroad, Bielke studied law. After completing his training, he took over the position of vice-president at the court of Turku in 1746 . As a member of the knighthood in the Swedish Reichstag , he supported the Mössorna party .

In addition to his professional career, he dealt with botanical studies. He also supported other biologists financially and was close friends with Carl von Linné and Pehr Kalm . This interest made Bielke one of the six founders of the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1739.

Bielke owned a number of country estates, the accurate management of which he attached great importance. On his Löfstad estate , he laid out a botanical garden that exceeded all previous private gardens in Sweden in terms of biodiversity.

Bielke was married twice.

  • On July 3, 1741 with Baroness Hedvig Maria (nee Brauner, 1721–1742), a daughter of Baron Johan Brauner (Braunerhjelm), a son Ture Johan Bielke (born 1742), who participated in the murder of the Swedish King Gustav III. should have been involved.
  • On September 12, 1746 with Eleonora (born von Mentzer, 1725–1786), a daughter of Baron Johan von Mentzer.
