Stephan Mariacher
Stephan Mariacher (born December 26, 1860 in Klausen ; † February 5, 1937 in Stams ) was an Austrian Cistercian and abbot of Stams Monastery from 1895 to 1937.
Life
Mariacher joined Stams Abbey in Tyrol in 1881, was ordained a priest in 1885 and, after ten years in pastoral care, elected abbot in 1895. As such, he had the entire monastery complex renovated and the farm buildings modernized (including the construction of a power station). In 1902 he founded a theological home school and in 1925 an oblate school. In 1923 he joined the Stams Abbey of the Mehrerau Congregation , to which it still belongs today. In 1934 he founded the Lower Maize Priory near Merano , where the monastery had owned extensive land since the Middle Ages. He died in 1937. Two years after his death, the Stams monastery was closed by the authorities and the monastery buildings were confiscated.
