The Lower Maize Priory of the Cistercian Abbey of Stams has existed since 1934 and is located in Merano - Lower Maize , South Tyrol and in the Diocese of Bozen-Brixen in Italy.

history

The Merano parish of Mais (since 1969 divided into Untermais and Obermais ) was owned by Stift Stams from 1272 with several churches , including the later pilgrimage church Maria Trost in today's Untermais. 1492 the monastery founded by monks own the provost corn to which until 1933 the Church St. Georgen part in today's top corn. In 1934, Abbot Stephan Mariacher (1894–1973) von Stams founded the Maria Trost priory (Latin: Prioratus Beatae Mariae Virginis Consolationis ), which has served the Untermais parish (Italian: Maia Bassa ) since 1969 . Several Abbots from Stams had closer ties to the parish of Mais and Untermais. Edmund Zoz died there in 1706. Abbot Bruno Heinrich (1908–1992) was prior there from 1960 to 1968. Abbot Eugen Fiderer (1894–1973) lived there from 1968 until his death. Abbot Josef Köll (1928–2008) was prior in Untermais from 1974 to 1985 and died there in retirement. Father Eugen Mattersberger died as the last prior in 2014. The old priory building at Romstrasse 136 was placed under monument protection in 1980 and is currently part of a new school complex of the municipality of Merano. The new Widum is being built in the former farm building.
