Stephen Gleeson (born August 3, 1988 in Dublin ) is an Irish football player . The central midfielder was one of the most promising talents at the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy and made his first international match for the Irish national team at the age of 18 . Most recently he was under contract with the Scottish first division club FC Aberdeen .

Athletic career

Born in the Irish capital, Stephen Gleeson learned to play football at a small club called Cherry Orchard before he decided at the age of 15 to give it a try after a successful trial in the youth division of Wolverhampton Wanderers, England. He had been discovered by the scout Willie Vaughan, who was responsible for the talent spotting in Irish territory on behalf of the "Wolves". In May 2006, after successfully completing his academic training, he signed a professional contract with a term of three years.

He gained his first experience in a professional league in the 2006/07 season when he was loaned to fourth division Stockport County for three months in November 2006 . After his debut on the occasion of the 2-1 win in the FA Cup against Exeter City on November 11, 2006, he was immediately a fixture in the game of "County", scored a total of two goals in 17 compulsory games and was part of the team that made nine Series won games - five of them with Gleeson's participation. The up-and-coming performances did not go unnoticed by his second division home club and so he received at the end of the 2006/07 season on four substitutions the opportunity to receive an award in Wolverhampton, including a play-off semi-final second leg against West Bromwich Albion .

Hopes for further leaps in development in Wolverhampton were not fulfilled in the period that followed. In the following two years, coach Mick McCarthy preferred players like Karl Henry , David Jones , David Edwards and, most recently, loan player Nigel Quashie in Gleeson's central midfield position. After a league cup appearance against Morecambe FC , Gleeson only received match practice from the end of February 2008, when he helped out for a month at fourth division Hereford United and shortly after his return to Wolverhampton played the season at his former loaner club Stockport County to an end. There Gleeson achieved promotion to the third-rate Football League One and he was instrumental in making it 1-1 with his goal in the play-off semi-final first leg - the goal was later voted the club's best goal of 2008 - and his participation in the final at Wembley Stadium jointly responsible for the success. The loan period was extended for the first half of the 2008/09 season in Stockport; when this also ended in February 2009, the "Wolves" loaned him a good month later to Stockport's third division rivals and the promotion aspirants Milton Keynes Dons . He led the "Dons" into the play-offs, but could not take part there due to an ankle injury.

On July 1, 2009 Gleeson finally switched to the MK Dons and signed a three-year contract there - the clubs involved kept silent about the amount of the transfer fee and training compensation.

In 2014 he moved to Birmingham City and in 2018 to Ipswich Town and Aberdeen FC .

Irish national team

At the age of only 17, Gleeson was already nominated for the Irish U-19 selection for the tournament in La Manga in February 2006 and in the qualifying games for the U-19 European Championship . On his debut for the U-21 team , he scored twice against Germany on August 21, 2007 (2-2). For the senior team he had already played his first two international matches; The debut on May 23, 2007 in a 2-2 draw against Ecuador in New York's Giants Stadium was followed by the second game against Bolivia just two days later - both friendship games had ended in a 1-1 draw. The international games three and four followed in 2017. In the friendly against Mexico (1: 3), he even scored his first goal.
