Stephen H. Daniel

Stephen Hartley Daniel (* 1950 in Salisbury , Wiltshire ) is an American historian of philosophy and university professor with British roots who has taught at Texas A&M University since 1983 .

Life

Steve Daniel came from a Scottish-Irish family. After attending St. John Vianney Preparatory School ( New Orleans ), Daniel studied philosophy at St. Joseph Seminary College ( Louisiana ), where he received his BA in 1972 . Shortly afterwards he married Sheryl Breaux. In 1974 Daniel graduated from Saint Louis University with a master's degree with a thesis on Giordano Bruno . In 1977 he received his Ph.D. with the dissertation The Philosophic Methodology of John Toland under James Collins. From 1978 to 1983 he was an assistant professor of philosophy at Spring Hill College , Mobile, Alabama . 1983 Daniel took a call to a professorship in philosophy at Texas A & M University. In 1986 he became an associate professor there and in 1993 a full professor.

Steve Daniel studied philosophy in the 17th and 18th centuries ( Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , George Berkeley , Jonathan Edwards, and others). He is fluent in Spanish and is considered one of the most influential professionals in the field of modern philosophy .

Honors and memberships

Stephen H. Daniel is a member of the International Berkeley Society and was elected President in 2006. From 2006 he was editor-in-chief of the philosophy journal Berkeley Studies . In 2007 he was awarded the title of Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence at Texas A&M University.
