Stephen McKenna (painter)

Stephen McKenna (* 1939 in London ; † May 4, 2017 in County Carlow , Ireland ) was a British figurative painter and printmaker .

life and work

McKenna was born in London in 1939. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. In 1973 McKenna moved to Donegal, Ireland. From then on he lived and worked not only in Ireland, but also in Germany, Belgium and Italy.

From 1995 to 1996 McKenna was visiting professor at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig . In 2002 he became a member of the "Royal Hibernian Academy" and was President there from 2005 to 2009. He was also a member of the Irish artists' association Aosdána .

Stephen McKenna has published numerous articles on art and in 1997 organized the exhibition The Pursuit of Painting at the Irish Museum of Modern Art .

His figurative paintings take up elements from still life , landscape painting and interior painting .

In 1972 Stephen McKenna painted the sanitary facilities in Rolandseck train station .

In the late 1990s, McKenna settled near the River Barrow in County Carlow, Ireland.
