Stephen W. Brennan

Stephen W. Brennan (born March 20, 1893 in Clinton , New York , †  April 9, 1968 in Utica , New York) was an American lawyer . After his appointment by President Franklin D. Roosevelt , he served from 1942 as a federal judge in the federal district court for the northern district of New York.

Career

After graduating from school, Stephen Brennan graduated from Albany Law School , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1915 . He then worked as a legal assistant in a New York law firm until 1916. In 1916 he served in the US Army and rose to the rank of captain . He then ran his own practice in New York and worked as a lawyer for the New York State Tax Administration. As a member of the Democratic Party , Brennan ran for a seat in the New York State Assembly in 1919 , but was defeated by Republican Hartwell W. Booth with 41:54 percent of the vote. In 1936 he took over the party leadership in Oneida County .

On March 31, 1942, Brennan was appointed by President Roosevelt to succeed Frank Cooper as a judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York . After confirmation by the US Senate on April 28 of the same year, he was able to take office on May 6. From 1948 to 1963 he was Chief Judge chairman of this federal court . On May 1, 1963, he switched to senior status and thus effectively retired. His seat fell to Edmund Port ; the court was presided over by James Thomas Foley . Stephen Brennan died on April 9, 1968 in Utica and was buried in Saint Marys Cemetery in his hometown of Clinton.
