Star and Death of Joaquin Murieta (original title: Звезда и смерть Хоакина Мурьеты ) is a Soviet feature film from 1982, which, directed by Vladimir Grammatikow, tells the life story of the Mexican national hero in the form of a musical based on the literary model by Pablo Neruda . The film opened in the GDR on February 22, 1985.

action

During the California gold rush, thousands of people came to America to find happiness. Among them is the Mexican Joaquin Murieta and his great love, Teresa. However, their dreams of wealth and well-being are soon completely destroyed by reality: bandits encounter them and take what little they have, with Teresa dying in the hands of the criminals. Joaquin gathers people to avenge death; his gang soon pulls women and children through the country, murdering and setting property on fire. The counter-violence is not long in coming, and Murieta is finally caught and killed by law enforcement officials.

criticism

The lexicon of international film was quite impressed by the “rock opera based on Pablo Neruda's only play. Formally as well as content-wise interesting, idiosyncratic, musically worth hearing, even if it is geared towards too much brutality. "

Remarks

Numerous songs line the plot.
