The Sternberg carnation ( Dianthus Sternbergii ) is a plant of the genus carnations ( Dianthus ) within the family of Caryophyllaceae (Caryophyllaceae). This type of carnation is also known as dolomite carnation. This species is named after Kaspar Maria von Sternberg .
features
The perennial herbaceous plant has a loose, cushion-shaped habit and reaches heights of about 10 to 20 cm. The blue-green leaves are linear-lanceolate and are up to 40 mm long and about 1 to 2 mm wide. On the underside of the leaf there is a clearly protruding middle nerve. The stem leaves are shorter than the three or four internodes .
The flowers are usually single. They only appear in twos or threes on the stem in lower positions. The calyx teeth are broadly lanceolate and have narrow skin margins. The four (less often two) calyx scales are broadly lanceolate and drawn out into a point. They are about half the length of the chalice. The petals are light pink to whitish. The plate of the petals is up to 18 mm long in hermaphrodite flowers and up to 7 mm long in whitish flowers. The nail is significantly longer than the calyx.
Flowering time is from June to July.
Occurrence
Lime or dolomite rock rubble, stony lawns and slopes and embankments are preferred as locations. It thrives at altitudes between 500 and 2000 meters (montane to alpine).
The distribution area includes the south-eastern limestone Alps from the Adige to the western Illyrian mountains. It occurs in Italy, Austria, Croatia and Slovenia. In Austria it is seldom found in Carinthia and Styria ( Dachsteinsüdwand ).
Systematics
one can distinguish the following subspecies:
- Dianthus sternbergii subsp. marsicus (Ten.) Pignatti (Syn .: Dianthus monspessulanus subsp. marsicus (Ten.) Novák ): It occurs in the central and southern Apennines.
- Dianthus sternbergii subsp. sternbergii : It has the chromosome number 2n = 90.
