Steven Carl Hofmann (born January 20, 1958 ) is an American mathematician who deals with analysis . He is a professor at the University of Missouri .

Hofmann studied at Washington University with a bachelor's degree in 1981 and received his doctorate under Max Jodeit at the University of Minnesota in 1988 ( Weighted Weak-Type (1,1) Bounds for Singular Integrals with Non-Smooth Kernel ). He was a post-doctoral student at McMaster University and in 1990 he became an assistant professor at Wright State University , where he became an associate professor in 1993. In 1994 he became Associate Professor and in 1998 Professor at the University of Missouri at Columbus, where he is Curator's Professor .

In 2002, together with Pascal Auscher , Michael T. Lacey , Alan McIntosh and Philippe Tchamitchian, he solved the Kato root problem for elliptic differential operators that had been open since 1953 .

He was visiting professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Picardy University in Amiens, the Paris-South University in Orsay, the Australian National University in Canberra, the University of Aix-Marseilles and visiting scholar at Macquarie University, the MSRI and the University of Edinburgh.

In 2006 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid ( Local Tb Theorems and Applications in PDE ). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
