Steve Smith (born December 24, 1945 in Toronto , Canada ) is a Canadian comedian , actor , screenwriter , television producer and director . He is best known for the television series The Red Green Show , which he produced from 1991 to 2006, and in which he plays the nature-loving craftsman "Red Green". He also wrote the scripts for most of the episodes and directed 22 episodes.

Live and act

Steve Smith studied mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo . He then worked as a teacher at an elementary school and in several other jobs. Together with his wife Morag, with whom he has been married since 1966, he founded the comedy duo "Smith and Smith", which also appeared with other well-known artists such as Ricky Nelson and Roy Orbison . From 1979 onwards, Steve Smith produced the sketch comedy series Smith & Smith for CHCH in Hamilton , for which he also wrote the script and acted himself. In the series, which ran until 1985 and consisted of 195 episodes, the role of "Red Green" was introduced.

In 1986 the series Me and Max was created , which Smith also produced. Steve and Morag Smith's two sons Max and Dave also played in the total of 26 episodes. Smith then wrote other comedy series such as Smith & Smith's Comedy Mill (60 episodes).

From 1990 Smith began working on the series The Red Green Show , which first ran on CHCH Hamilton from 1991. When the budget ran out in 1993, Steve Smith bought the rights and produced the series for YTV . In the fall of 1994, the show returned to CHCH Hamilton and ran for three years under the title The New Red Green Show . Due to the great success of the series, it was taken over by CBC Television - again as The Red Green Show - in 1997 . It has aired nationally in Canada and on 90 PBS stations in the United States . The series ended in 2006.

While working on the Red Green Show, he wrote for other series and starred in television series and films. In 2004, he was host of the show series Steve Smith Playhouse , in which he presented little-known films.

Steve Smith has been nominated 27 times for the Canadian Gemini Award . He received it in 1989 for Smith and Smith's Comedy Mill and in 1998 for The Red Green Show . In 2005 he received the Earle Gray Award for his complete works . In 2006 he became a "Member" of the Order of Canada . In 2011 he received an honorary doctorate from McMaster University .
