Steven Genter

Robert Steven "Steve" Genter (born January 4, 1951 in Artesia , California ) is a former American swimmer and Olympic champion.

Career

Genter studied at the University of California, Los Angeles . After swimming successfully in high school, he was part of the 1971 US team at the Pan American Games . There he won gold in both freestyle relays and silver in the 400 meter freestyle behind his compatriot James McConica .

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, the shaved head from Ghent won the silver medal behind Mark Spitz in the 200 meter freestyle . Two days later, the American 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay with John Kinsella , Frederick Tyler , Steven Genter and Mark Spitz won the gold medal in a world record time with almost six seconds ahead of the German relay. One day later the American Rick DeMont won the 400 meter freestyle ahead of the Australian Brad Cooper and Steven Genter. Another three days later, DeMont was disqualified for taking an ephedrine-containing asthma drug and Genter moved up to second place.
