Stewart Sutherland, Baron Sutherland of Houndwood
Stewart Ross Sutherland, Baron Sutherland of Houndwood (born February 25, 1941 in Aberdeen , Scotland , † January 29, 2018 ) was a British academic, professor, public servant and since 2001 a member of the House of Lords .
Early years
Little is currently known about Sutherland's childhood and parentage. He received his education at the Woodside School and at the Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen , then went to the University of Aberdeen , where he received his Master of Arts in Philosophy with honors in 1963 . After attending Corpus Christi College in Cambridge , he completed his studies there in 1965 with a Master of Arts in philosophy of religion .
Professional career
His professional career began with his first position as an assistant professor at Bangor University in Bangor , Wales , 1965–1968. In 1968 he was appointed professor at the University of Stirling , which he remained until he became an associate professor at the same university in 1972. 1976–1977 Sutherland worked as a lecturer at the University of Stirling and then moved to King's College in London, where he was professor of history and the philosophy of religion from 1977–1985. In 1981 he became vice rector of King's College , 1985–1990 he was rector of the college.
Sutherland was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of London in 1990 , which he remained until 1994. From 1993 to 2000 he served on the Science and Technology Council and from 1994-1996 chaired the Committee on Appeal Court Procedure for Scotland. In 1994 he became Rector and Vice Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh (until 2002). Sutherland was 1995-2001 member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Council for the financing of higher education), 1997-1999 chairman of the Royal Commission on Long Term Care of the Elderly (Royal Commission for Long Term Care of the Elderly ), at the time appointed by the Blair -Government, and 2002-2008 Head of Gresham College .
Sutherland began writing books when he was appointed Professor of History and Philosophy of Religion at King's College , London . The articles he wrote for journals are numerous. In addition to the national honors, he has received ten honorary awards from various universities in Europe and the United States .
