history

Reflections on this first polymer frame pistol series of Steyr Mannlicher introduced in the early 1990s, including the former factory of the company Sagittarius Glock , Wilhelm Bubits on. After Bubit switched to Steyr-Mannlicher, he developed the new Steyr M and S pistol models together with engineer Friedrich Aigner. The M9 model was first presented as a 9 mm weapon in spring 1999. The M-Pistols and the S-Pistols are light-weight polymer grip weapons in compact (M and M-A1 series) and subcompact (S and S-A1 series) versions.

The features of the pistols are the barrel axis set deep above the handle , their trapezoidal sight and the shape of the handle. The low barrel axis reduces the flapping up in the shot, the trapezoidal sight should enable quick target acquisition and improve the hit position. A good German performance of the weapons is aimed for through the ergonomically optimized angle position of the handle of 111 ° and its shape.

The pistols are only offered with a partially pre- tensioned Double-Action-Only (DAO) trigger system, Steyr Mannlicher designation Reset Action System . The firing pin is covered on the inside , no striker emerges from the slide housing.

A safety button is integrated in the center of the trigger tongue , which is intended to ensure that the shot is triggered solely by the orthogonally acting finger. The pistols have an optional second, manual trigger lock, the activation rod of which protrudes from the housing on both sides above the trigger guard. The release of this second trigger lock is done by the trigger finger, while this establishes contact with the trigger tongue. This second backup is u. a. for the German market, but not available for the US market due to product liability reasons. In order to be able to check the state of charge, a window allows a view of the closed cartridge chamber when viewed from above. The pistols are also optionally equipped with a chamber charge level indicator attached to the back of the slide.

With a key provided by the manufacturer or with a handcuff key, the pistol can be locked on the dismantling lever. In this condition the weapon can neither be fired nor dismantled. When the pistol is relaxed, it is sufficient to swivel the dismantling lever downwards to push the slide from the rest position forwards off the handle and to remove it.

The trigger group of the M-A1 and S-A1 models has been fundamentally revised by Aigner. If the Bubits-Aigner concept of the M and S models had not seen any structural necessity for an internal fall protection, Aigner provided the new M-A1 and S-A1 trigger group with such a fall protection.

M-A1 and S-A1 models are equipped with a Picatinny rail in the front area of ​​the handle . This enables lamps or other target devices to be attached without tools.

In addition to the trapezoidal visor, an illuminated visor for night use and a match visor are optionally available from the manufacturer.

The weapon was not officially introduced as an orderly weapon . It is used by police forces, security services and private individuals worldwide. It was officially introduced as a service weapon in Malaysia by the Polis Diraja Malaysia and in Mexico by the Policía Federal Preventiva .
