Stibor von Baysen (* around 1405 , † 1480 ) was a Prussian knight and governor of Polish Prussia from 1459 to 1480.

Life

Stibor von Baysen came from a German family who had immigrated from the Lübeck area and owned properties near Osterode . His brothers were Hans von Baysen , governor from 1554 to 1559, and Gabriel von Baysen.

In 1433, Stibor von Baysen participated in peace negotiations between the Teutonic Order and Poland . In 1440 he was one of the founders of the Prussian Confederation . In 1442 he was Vogt in the diocese of Pomesania. In 1454, after the West Prussian territories had been subordinated to Poland, he was appointed voivode of Koenigsberg by the king , and in 1456 as voivode of Elbing .

In 1459, after the death of his brother, Stibor von Baysen was appointed governor of Polish Prussia. In 1466 he signed the Second Peace of Thorn . In 1467 the king deposed Stibor von Baysen as guberator and instead appointed him voivode of Marienburg . The Prussian estates did not accept this dismissal and continued to regard him as their governor. Then in 1472 the king awarded him the newly created title of captain general of Polish Prussia. In the state acts of the state parliaments, von Baysen was still referred to as governor. In 1476 he asked to be dismissed from office because of physical weakness. The application was rejected by the king.

In 1480 Stibor von Baysen died. He was succeeded as captain by his son Nikolaus.
