Liesel Metten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liesel Metten (* 1938 in Recklinghausen ) is a German artist whose extensive work consists of sculptures and pictures of idiosyncratic mythical creatures . Metten had created his own fascinating cosmos of creatures over "decades of exuberant fantasy out of bronze, plaster of paris, cork, styrofoam or paper," the beings would look like "new creations of nature", wrote the Allgemeine Zeitung (Mainz) on the 80th Birthday of the artist.

Life

Metten studied fine arts with the sculptor Heinrich Kirchner in Munich in the 1950s . In 1961 she married the sculptor Johannes Metten, a nephew of the "Rheinhessen painter" Jean Metten . She moved into the Metten house , the former restaurant "Zur Schöne Aussicht" and the birthplace of Jean Metten in Nieder-Olm . In her new - meanwhile long - standing - hometown, numerous of her bronze sculptures stand, including the pretzel eater , the guide dog , the snail track , and together with her husband Johannes' fountain sculpture Water Birds (1978) form a sculpture path through the city. In addition to the studio in the Metten-Haus ( Mettenscheune ) in Nieder-Olm, the artist couple has owned the studio on the river in Bacharach since 1988 .

Awards and honors

Metten received numerous prizes: a gold medal for a sculpture at the 5th Semaine Internationale de la Femme in Nice (1970), the advancement award of the city of Mainz (1973), the advancement award of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate (1975), the award of the Stiftung Kultur in the district of Mainz-Bingen (2002). Together with her husband, she received the Art Prize of the Ike and Berthold Roland Foundation and the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate in 2016 .

The Liesel-Metten-Schule in Nieder-Olm was named after the artist in 2015 , a special needs school for severely and multiply disabled people.
