Jean Metten (born May 9, 1884 in Nieder-Olm ; † June 26, 1971 in Mainz ) was a German painter , draftsman and etcher of the 20th century . Apart from his studies in Leipzig and during the First World War , he lived and worked outside of the established art world , mostly in his place of birth Nieder-Olm in Rheinhessen ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).

Life

Jean Metten first attended the arts and crafts school in Mainz from the winter of 1908 to 1912. From the winter semester of 1912 - with an interruption during the First World War - until the end of the summer semester of 1921 he was enrolled at the Leipzig Academy . With the exception of four extended trips to Italy, his further life and artistic work was limited to Rheinhessen.

The town of Nieder-Olm named a street after him in the early 1980s, the Maler-Metten-Weg.

The former Nieder-Olmer restaurant "Zur Schöne Aussicht", where Jean Metten was born and lived for a long time, is known today as the Metten House . His nephew Johannes Metten (1929-2020) lived in the house with his wife Liesel Metten (* 1938). Johannes and Liesel Metten are well-known artists in Rheinhessen - like their relative Jean.
