The Westphalia Initiative for Personal Responsibility and Public Welfare , based in Münster, is a non-profit foundation under civil law. In accordance with its statutes, the Westphalia Initiative Foundation promotes science and research, education and upbringing, as well as promoting the idea of ​​home in relation to the Westphalia area. In these funding areas, the foundation wants to promote the principle of subsidiarity through research, implementation and communication. The Foundation

The foundation of the Westphalia Initiative for Personal Responsibility and Public Welfare goes back to the will of the entrepreneur Martin Leicht , who died in 1998 . It is a foundation under civil law . According to its statutes, the Westphalia Initiative Foundation is an operational, not a support foundation. She usually realizes her projects and initiatives together with cooperation partners from the public or non-profit sector as well as from business. The projects are not only financially supported by the foundation, they are carried out by the foundation or accompanied by staff. With the express cooperation mandate, the Westphalia Initiative Foundation acts as a networking institution in Westphalia.

The board currently consists of the chairman Hans Moormann, the deputy chairman Klaus P. Strautmann and Stefanie Schnusenberg-Besselmann. The board of directors is controlled by a twelve-person board of trustees, chaired by Carl-Julius Cronenberg from Arnsberg. The day-to-day operations in the office in the center of Münster are managed by the managing director Gerd Meyer-Schwickerath.

Activities and projects

Civil society

  • Annual competition WestfalenBeweger: competition to strengthen civic engagement. Prize money of up to 35,000 euros will be distributed in the competition.
  • Foundation Association Westphalia-Lippe : The aim of the foundation association, which was initiated in 2006 and coordinated by the Westphalia Initiative Foundation, is to encourage foundations in Westphalia to enter into regional cooperation and to promote the exchange of know-how.

  • The Westphalia Initiative Foundation, together with the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe, commissioned a study on current and future demographic and economic developments and challenges in Westphalia and its subregions. The contractor is the Berlin Institute for Population and Development . In July 2018, the study was presented as a publication "One region, many prospects. How demographic change demands Westphalia" in the NRW state representation in Berlin .

Europe - Subsidiarity and Regions

  • On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the death of the founder, Martin Leicht, based on the legacy of the founder, a new discussion was initiated around the foundation's core concepts such as common good and personal initiative, subsidiarity, Europe of the regions, home Westphalia, social responsibility and the foundation system.
