Stigmata (plural of old Greek stigma , "brand") is a Russian metalcore band founded in 2003 in St. Petersburg , Russia .

Band history

At the beginning of 2002 the bassist Dennis and the guitarist Taras founded a nameless band, which got its current name Stigmata a few months later. The name of the band had no special meaning, but was often attributed to a religious background by many journalists.

Only in 2004 did the ex-drummer Nick and the singer Nelson join the band. In this group of four, concerts were organized independently, leaflets were printed and distributed and the first own music video was produced. In the same year a record deal with the label Kap-Kan Records was signed under the stigmatas first album Konwejer snow ( Russian Конвеер снов ; English Conveyor of Dreams ) appeared in the autumn of the same year. Within the next six weeks, the first major concerts were played, at which a first small fan base developed. In May 2005 a revised version of the first album was released.

In September of the same year their third album was released under the name More Then Love , which went in a more melodic direction than the previous albums .

In the spring of 2006 the DVD Pieces Of Life was released, which among other things contains 17 live songs from various concerts as well as interviews with the band members. At the same time, Phil replaced drummer Nick and guitarist Duke joined the band as a new member who did part of the songwriting.

In December 2006, Stigmata's first single, Ice , was released, which marked the start of a new era for the band. The single was very successful and featured in the alternative charts. In addition, the band won the " St. Petersburg Alternative Music Awards 2007" in the "Song of the Year" category with the single . The song can be downloaded in the English vocal version from ReverbNation . As part of the “Roat To Your Hearts Tour”, Stigmata played concerts in Estonia , Belarus , Lithuania and the Ukraine . The band also played a concert with Pleymo and Natalie Imbruglia at Russia's largest rock music festival, The Wings .

In 2007 Stigmata played concerts in Russia with well-known bands such as Killswitch Engage or the German metalcore band Caliban . In the same year the second single was released in September . In the fall of 2007, the band signed a record deal with Navigator Records . In the winter of the same year drummer Feud'or took over from Phil. On September 12, 2007 her fourth album Stigmata was released.

In 2008 the second DVD was released under the title Acoustic & Drive . In 2009, the group released the third single, Rise and Fall . In the same year, the fourth studio album My Way was released. There are 2 versions. The normal one contains ten songs, the digipack version 12 and 3 music videos for the songs My Way , Rise and Fall and Let's Dance . In the summer the group played a few concerts with Bullet for My Valentine . A year later the band toured with The Korea and Jane Air .

On June 15, 2011, the group released the Internet series "Superkoza" on YouTube . The series is about the life of the musicians stigmatas, as well as documentations of their concert tours and studio work. This series consists of 14 episodes. At the beginning of each episode, a piece of their single "До девятой ступени" was played. This appeared later on October 21, 2011. A continuation of the series is planned.

On June 30, 2011, Stigmata was the opening act for Slipknot , which performed in Saint Petersburg that day .

The band released the first single for the new album on October 14, 2011 and is called "Камикадзе". A week later, "До девятой ступени" was published. Stigmata is planning a new tour in which Vladimir Zinoviev, the former Neversmile drummer, will accompany the group. This starts on October 23, 2011 and ends on November 26, 2011. The tour will lead through Russia and Ukraine .

Music genre

Stigmata plays classic metalcore as played by bands like Caliban , Chimaira , As I Lay Dying and Killswitch Engage . Nelson's vocals alternate between deep growls , high shouts and screaming . The refrains are mostly sung clean .

In some songs there is a steady increase in the instrumental heaviness. This is more and more used by bands associated with post-grunge . In terms of content, the texts deal with social grievances, suicide and love. Some magazines attribute a religious background to the band, but this cannot be proven. The songs are all written in Russian , with the exception of the songs "Ice", "The Wings" and "The Last Gulp", of which there are also English versions.

The group is supported by Alternative One , Bravo, and Vic Firth . The online retailer CD-Russia.com sells the albums Stigmata and My Way worldwide.
