Stinson Beach is a census-designated place in California with 632 inhabitants (as of 2010). The small town is located directly on California's Pacific coast , around 39 minutes by car northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge . Because of its proximity to San Francisco , the sandy beach of Stinson Beach is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Not far from the town are other tourist attractions such as Muir Beach , Mount Tamalpais and the Muir Woods National Monument . Stinson Beach has been the destination for the Dipsea Race , the oldest trail run in the United States, since 1905 .
history
Before the beginning of the Mexican colonization, the place was in the settlement area of the coastal Miwok , an Indian people who originally inhabited large areas north of what is now San Francisco. A land purchase by Nathan H. Stinson is documented for 1866, who later gave the place its name. In 1870 a country road was built that connected Stinson Beach with Sausalito further south-east and thus also created a connection to the ferry connection to San Francisco. Stinson Beach took a great boom in the wake of the devastating earthquake in San Francisco in 1906 , as a result of which numerous former residents of San Francisco settled in the area. Stinson Beach's first post office opened in 1916. In 1939 the area was sold to Marin County . It fell to the State of California in 1950 and has been administered by the National Park Service since 1977 .
