Muir Beach is a census-designated place in California with 310 inhabitants (as of 2010). The site, named after the American scientist and conservationist John Muir , is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean , about 16.5 miles (26.6 kilometers) northwest of San Francisco and 2 miles (3 kilometers) north of the entrance to the Muir Woods National Monument . With its sandy beach, Muir Beach is a popular destination for tourists and residents of the San Francisco Bay Area .

The United States Census 2010 , a census on April 1, 2010, was 310 residents. The largest population group are the whites with a share of 91.3%. There are also 3.9% Asians , 2.3% Hispanics or Latinos , 1.6% African American and 2.6% mixed race.
These are distributed over 141 households and 86 families. 19.1% of the households have children under the age of 18. 56.0% of households consist of married couples of different sexes, 11.3% consist of single women and 16.3% consist of single men.
Muir Beach Overlook
On the northern edge of Muir Beach, high above the cliffs of the Pacific coast and just off California State Route 1 , is the Muir Beach Overlook. Muir Beach Overlook is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and contains the ruins of former American coastal artillery positions. During the Second World War and especially after the attack on Pearl Harbor , these positions protected the coastal strip north of San Francisco from a possible attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy .
