Stjepan Betlheim
Stjepan Betlheim (born July 22, 1898 in Zagreb , Austria-Hungary ; died September 24, 1970 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia ) was a Yugoslav psychiatrist and psychoanalyst .
Life
Stjepan Betlheim was born into a Jewish family in Zagreb, which was part of Hungary at the time . He studied medicine in Graz and Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1922. In Vienna he worked for Julius Wagner-Jauregg , began an analysis with Paul Schilder and worked with Heinz Hartmann . The training analyzes he had at Sandor Rado , the control analyzes in Karen Horney and Helene German .
With Nikola Sugar (1897–1945) and Hugo Klajn (1894–1981) he built a psychoanalytic group in Yugoslavia , which lasted until the occupation of Yugoslavia in 1941, but which did not (yet) receive the consecration of the International Psychoanalytic Association . During World War II , he fled to Bosnia and participated in the Yugoslav resistance against the Germans, Hungarians and Italians.
After the war he became a lecturer at the Neurological-Psychiatric University Clinic in Zagreb . He became a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association in 1952 and founded the Yugoslav national organization in 1968. Betlheim further developed group therapy for sexual disorders .
Honors
The Croatian Post honored him with a stamp in 1998.
