The Baron von Simmern'sche Rentamt in Eltville was one of the largest and most traditional wineries in the Rheingau . 45 hectares of vineyards were cultivated in Hattenheim , Erbach , Rauenthal , Kiedrich and Eltville. The winery was a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP).

Locations and grape varieties

The winery owns significant shares in some top locations in the Rheingau:

As usual in the Rheingau, Riesling is the dominant grape variety . He accounts for over 90% of the forest cover. The rest is shared by Burgundy varieties ( Pinot Noir , Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay ) that grow in the Eltville Sonnenberg . The yield has always been kept low (currently 55 hl / ha).

The Langwerth-von-Simmern'schen wines are characterized by their strong and full-bodied style. A completely dry expansion is not necessarily aimed for, a slight residual sweetness serves the harmony of the wines. This also increases their shelf life. The Rieslings from the top locations only reach their optimum after a long period of cellar maturation, two to three years appear as a minimum.

history

The origins of the estate go back to the late Middle Ages: On April 28, 1464, Duke Ludwig I of Pfalz-Zweibrücken enfeoffed his Chancellor Johann Langwerth von Simmern with 32 2/3 acres in the Hattenheimer Mannberg. In 1472 the barons Langwerth von Simmern took their seat in the Hattenheimer Burg , in 1711 they moved to the Stockheimer Hof in Eltville. The estate's wines have always been among the best in the Rheingau. Customers included Thomas Jefferson and the Russian Imperial House. At the 1904 World Exhibition in St. Louis ( Louisiana Purchase Exposition ), a "Hattenheimer Mannberg" of the estate topped the price list with 20 gold marks per bottle at the time. The American President Dwight D. Eisenhower was later also a lover . Since 1996 the winery has been managed by Georg Reinhard Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern . Since the 2003 vintage, the Gault-Millau Germany wine guide has once again conceded a strong improvement in quality.

The Langwerther Hof winery (formerly Stockheimer Hof) in Eltville was given up in 2018 and the property was sold. Georg-Reinhard Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern is now leasing several pieces of land, including 15 hectares, to the Corvers-Kauter winery, which now manages vineyards steeped in history such as Erbacher Marcobrunn , Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen and Rauenthaler Baiken . Another five hectares of vineyards were sold to the Dotzheimer Weingut Höhn.
