history

The main store in central Helsinki, summer 2013

Georg Franz Heinrich Stockmann (born January 14, 1825, † January 6, 1906 in Bad Kreuznach ) came from Ritzerau near Lübeck . He came to Finland in 1852 and in 1859 became the manager of a shop on Senate Square in Helsinki. In 1862 he acquired this business and has since operated it under his own name. G. F. Stockmann Aktiengesellschaft (shareholder G. F. Stockmann and his sons Karl and Frans) was founded in 1902.

The main building in Aleksanterinkatu was completed in 1930 and was already equipped with revolving doors, refreshment stands and escalators. The nearby bookstore "Akateeminen kirjakauppa" was acquired in the same year and subsequently relocated to the department store. In 1969, their range moved to a new building designed by star architect Alvar Aalto .

In 1957 the branch in Tampere was opened. Other stores followed in Turku (1982), Moscow (1989 since 1998 as a department store), Tallinn (1996), Riga (2003) and St. Petersburg (2010). In 2014 Stockmann operates nine department stores in Finland and the Baltic countries, as well as seven in Russia.

In 2015 the “Akateeminen kirjakauppa”, meanwhile the largest bookstore in the country with a turnover of around 40 million euros, was sold to the Swedish Bonnier Group .

In 2016 Stockmann sold its activities in Russia to Reviva Holdings . Stockmann continued to own and operate the Nevsky Center in Saint Petersburg until it was sold in January 2019.

In 2017 Stockmann sold the Hobby Hall to the SGN Group . In the same year the company sold its 'Stockmann Herkku' food division to the S Group for 27 million euros .

Lindex

Stockmann acquired Lindex in 2007. Today Lindex is one of the leading fashion chains in Europe. At the end of 2016, Lindex had a total of 475 branches in 16 countries, 39 of which were franchise stores in 6 countries. Lindex has 436 stores in 10 countries.
