Stone was a Finnish thrash metal band from Kerava that was formed in 1985 and split again in 1991. Since then, the band has performed several times in 2000, 2008 and 2013.

history

Before founding the band Stone, bassist and singer Janne Joutsenniemi and guitarist Roope Latvala had played for several years with a changing line-up, but the band was only founded after guitarist Jiri Jalkanen and drummer Pekka Kasari had joined. Together they developed some songs and played some gigs. In early 1987, the Finnish rock magazine Rumba became aware of the band. Thanks to good live reviews, as well as other articles and interviews by the band, the band's awareness increased. After the band released some demos produced by Mikko Karmila , they reached a contract with Megamania Records .

Their first single, Real Delusion / The Day of Death , was released in November 1987, which was followed by the self-titled debut album in 1988. Then some tours followed. The next album called No Anaesthesia! appeared in 1989. During the tours that followed after the release, guitarist Jiri Jalkanen had to leave the band after performing on March 15, 1990 at Tavastia Club in Helsinki . Jalkanen was replaced by Markku Niiranen, who previously played for Airdash . The third album, Colors , was released towards the end of 1990. The last album called Emotional Playground was released in 1991. In the summer of the same year the band announced that the band would split up after a small, final tour. In September 1991 the band broke up. Several concerts were recorded during the tour and released as a live album Free in 1992 . Roope Latvala formed the band Latvala Bros with his brother and recorded an album. After that, Roope Latvala joined the band Dementia for their only album. He then joined Waltari and a few years later Sinergy . He currently plays with Children of Bodom . Janne Joutsenniemi founded the band Suburban Tribe . Pekka Kasari joined Amorphis and played in the band Road Crew . Markku Niiranen joined Corporal Punishment , but is no longer active there. Jiri Jalkanen was working on a country music project. In the summer of 2000 the band reunited for a few festivals, but broke up that same year. In 2003 remastered versions of their albums were released. In 2008 the band could be seen live at the Sauna Open Air .

style

Stone was one of the most important bands on the Finnish thrash metal scene. In the beginning the band played aggressive, fast Thrash Metal, which was more and more designed for complexity in later releases. Wolfgang Schäfer ( Rock Hard ) heard parallels to Slayers Seasons in the Abyss and Voivod's Killing Technology on Emotional Playground . Vocally he was reminded of Algy Ward ( Tank ) and Tom Araya (Slayer).
