Suburban Tribe was a Finnish alternative metal band from Helsinki that was formed in 1992 and split up in 2011.
history
The band was founded in the summer of 1992 by bassist Janne Joutsenniemi (ex- Stone ), guitarist Roope Sirén (ex- Airdash ) and drummer Alec Hirst-Gee. Together they played the first cover versions while looking for a singer. With Ville Tuomi they first found a suitable line-up, but this got out in December of the same year to join the band Kyyria . Tuomi was replaced by Jouni Markkanen. On New Year's Eve of the year, the band decided on the name Sub-Urban Tribe. Until spring 1993 they played a few concerts in their hometown Helsinki. It was Kari Hynninen of Zen Garden Records aware of the band and took them under contract.
The band recorded their debut album in the basement of Roope Siren's mother. At the end of February 1994 the debut album Primitive was released in Finland. In the summer the band played several concerts in Finland, as well as at a festival in Slovenia .
The band recorded their second album, called Purity , in Orimattila in a 100-year-old farmhouse and released it in September 1995. Before the release, the band held a concert at the Popkomm in Cologne .
After a tour that lasted until New Year's Eve, the band began working with the Finnish musician Don Huonot . A music video was created for the song Sirkuksessa , which received an award for the best Finnish rock video in 1997. The two bands go on tour together for a month. After that, the band worked on new songs.
The third album Panorama was released in the spring of 1997. Since they had worked with numerous guest musicians on the album, who played string instruments and synthesizers, the band needed a keyboardist for the tour that would follow the album's release. With Emerson Burton, who now plays under the name Janne Johannes Purttinen at HIM , the band found a suitable keyboardist. The single First Spring Day took first place in the Finnish radio charts.
In 1998, the Prime Time Collection was released, a best-of CD that featured covers of David Bowie's Life on Mars or Sabotage by the Beastie Boys .
The band was then signed by Spinefarm Records . The album Electro 57 was released in October 1998 on this label. The release was followed by a tour in November that lasted into the next year. In the following years the band took a break and worked on new material. In 2002 the album Suburban Tribe was released by EMI . With the release, the spelling of the band name also changed. Ville Tuomi, who was initially the singer of the band, also replaced singer Markkanen, keyboardist Burton was no longer in the band.
Before the album was released in Germany , the band went with Oomph! on tour through Germany and then through Finland. The single Frozen Ashes took first place in Finland.
Nevertheless, Suburban Tribe was the only album that was distributed in Germany. In January 2004 the album Manimal was released. The release was followed by a tour of Finland. In addition, the appearance at a festival in Moscow was planned, but it was canceled.
The next album called Revolt Now! followed in April 2006. The album reached number 7 in the charts in Finland.
In 2007 the compilation became Recollection and in 2010 the album Now and Ever After . In 2011 the band broke up.
style
In the music, influences from bands like Korn and Misery Inc. can be heard. It alternates between soft and harder vocal passages.
