Stonewall is a settlement in the US County of Gillespie , Texas . It is the birthplace of former US President Lyndon B. Johnson (1908–1973), who served from 1963 to 1969.
The settlement was named after the Southern General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and is also known as the Peach Capital of Texas (peach capital of Texas). The traditional cultivation of peach trees was started by German settlers in the 19th century.
Stonewall is about 86 kilometers (55 miles) west of Austin and about as far north of San Antonio .
In addition to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, the Sauer-Beckmann-Farmstead , which shows the visitor farm life at the end of the 19th century, is a place of interest.
The first to be executed after the reinstatement of the death penalty in the USA , Gary Gilmore (1940–1977), was born here.
