Stoney LaRue Phillips (* 1977 in Taft , Texas ) is an American country singer on the Red Dirt scene.

The son of a bass player and a nurse was born in 1977 in Taft , Texas . It was named after the main character in the western series Stoney Burke and after his grandfather, whose middle name was LaRue . He spent most of his youth near Chickasha , Oklahoma . The son of a bass player made his first recordings at the age of twelve. He made his breakthrough as a musician in Stillwater , Oklahoma. There he made the acquaintance of other musicians such as Cody Canada or Mike McClure. First he was active in his group The Organic Boogie Band , with whom he recorded his debut album Downtown , which was released in 2002 . LaRue then moved to New Braunfels , Texas and released his second album, The Red Dirt Album , in 2005 , which includes the name of his Stillwater-adopted musical style, Red Dirt . With his new album LaRue also reached the American country album charts , which he also achieved with his three successors - two live albums and a third studio album released in 2011. With the latter, he also made it into the Billboard 200 for the first time and was able to book 53rd place as the highest position. LaRue has also made it to the top of the indie charts . In 2013 he was a background singer for Miranda Lambert in the song All Kinds of Kinds . His latest studio album, Aviator , was released in October 2014 . On November 15, 2014, he made his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville .

He currently performs with Jeremy Bryant (drums), Randy Ragsdale (drums), Jesse Fritz (bass), Rodney Pyeatt (guitar), Jeremy Watkins (fiddle) and Steve Littleton (keys). He has partly engaged Mike McClure , the singer of The Great Divide , as a producer .

LaRue has sold over 400,000 records to date (as of July 2014).

LaRue lives in Edmond , Oklahoma.
