Story of My Life ( English for The Story of My Life ) is an English-language pop song that was interpreted by Lesley Roy . She wrote it with Robert Marvin, Catt Gravitt and Tom Shapiro. With the title she should represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

The Irish broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann announced on March 5, 2020 that Lesley Roy would represent their country in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. The title Story of My Life was written by herself, along with Robert Marvin, Catt Gravitt and Tom Shapiro. The team also worked on the composition with Robert Marvin. He produced it with the interpreter. Marvin was also responsible for mixing .

According to Roy, Catt Grevitt suggested the title line, which was the starting point. Her team first considered a ballad , but the singer came out in favor of an up-tempo song.

Music and lyrics

With the song, the interpreter wants to express a universal message. It could be addressed to anyone who feels dragged down by something. Ultimately, it is about not complaining about your own problems, but about getting up again and moving on.

“It is a song about owning who you are, and how we do not need to be put in boxes. I also did not want to make it sound moany or slow and miserable, but more of a celebration about our own stories. "

“It's a song about being in control of who you are and not having to pigeonhole ourselves. I also didn't want it to sound grumpy or slow and miserable, but like a celebration of our own stories. "

- Lesley Roy

The text is made up of two stanzas, after which the pre-chorus and chorus are played. The first repetition of the chorus consists of four lines, the second and third repetitions are twice as long. The four lines are not sung twice, but changed slightly in the second half. Finally, the post-chorus and a single-line outro are sung.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Ireland should have performed this song in the first semifinals of the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled. Phillip McMahon was to take over the creative direction.

reception

According to Mick Heaney of the Irish Times , Story of My Life is different from the type of pop songs Ireland used to send to the Eurovision Song Contest. Roy's voice is euphoric and the chorus has great catchy tune potential. However, he doubts whether the Irish contribution could stand out strongly enough from the rest of the field. But it is the most promising Irish contribution in a long time.

ESCXtra compared the song to the music from the decade of the 2000s . The Irish title is like two cups of Katy Perry mixed with four spoons of Avril Lavigne . The title brings back memories of the early works of Perry and P! Nk . Eurovisionary doubted whether the song would have survived the semifinals at the ESC, although it was well suited for the radio. The German blog ESC Kompakt noted that the song “could have participated in the ESC ten years ago and would have attracted just as little attention as it does today”. The song could "be located anywhere between 2000 and 2018". Story of My Life is not original, but effective.

publication

While the music video was first shown on March 5, the accompanying single was released on March 13, 2020. The video was directed by Kate Dolan. According to the singer, it was very much influenced by the LGBT scene . Dolan and producer Karen Twomey have chosen people who actually live the roles that they play in the music video and have not only been cast for this. Roy said the video expressed exactly what she wanted to capture with the song.
