Crossing the Strait of Tiquina, with San Pedro in the background

The Strait of Tiquina ( Spanish Estrecho de Tiquina ) is a bottleneck in Lake Titicaca on the Altiplano in Bolivia , which connects the northern main part of the lake, Lake Chucuito , with the southern part of the lake, Lake Wiñaymarka .

The Strait of Tiquina is 800 meters wide and has a minimum water depth of 21 meters. It is located in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of San Pedro de Tiquina in the province of Manco Kapac in the La Paz department . The Strait of Tiquina is crossed by the Ruta 2 highway , which connects the metropolis of La Paz with the Copacabana Peninsula .

The waterway is crossed by the only public ferry in Bolivia between the two villages of San Pablo de Tiquina in the southeast and San Pedro de Tiquina . To cross the road, the vehicles are transported individually with fragile-looking ferry boats (see photo), bus travelers have to leave their buses and are transported on passenger ferry boats, while the buses are loaded onto bus ferries. The crossing over the Strait of Tiquina takes about 15 to 20 minutes and costs 1.50 bolivianos for people and 30 bolivianos for vehicles (as of May 2011)

Considerations to cross the narrowness with a road bridge are always nourished if one of the transport boats has an accident while crossing the waterway, as was the case in January 2011, when the governor of the La Paz department, César Cocario, took up this idea again.
