The Ploieşti tram has existed since 1987, making it one of the younger tram systems in Romania . The city of Ploieşti at the southern foot of the Carpathian Mountains is located about 55 kilometers north of Bucharest and has about 230,000 inhabitants. The track width of the tram is 1435 millimeters ( standard gauge ), the route length is currently ten kilometers and 25 stops are served by two lines.

history

The tram network in Ploieşti was built at the expense of the city of Ploieşti. In 1985, construction work on the route and the construction of the depot began . In 1987 the first line Spitalul JudețeanGara de Sud was opened. In 1989 there were already six tram lines, on which 35 percent of the local public transport in the city of Ploieşti is provided. In 1990 trolleybus routes were also introduced in Ploieşti .

At the time of the greatest expansion of the network, trams operated on eight lines:

  • 101 Spitalul Județean ↔ Gara de Sud
  • 102 Spitalul Județean ↔ Gara de Vest
  • 103 Gara de Vest ↔ Gara de Sud
  • 104 Armoniei ↔ Uztel
  • 105 Gara de Sud ↔ Cablul Românesc
  • 106 Gara de Sud ↔ Uztel
  • 107 Gara de Vest ↔ Uztel
  • 28 Spitalul Județean ↔ Uztel

Shrinkage of the network since 1998

In 1998, the mayor Horia Toma decided to discontinue line 105, with the result that the McDonalds ↔ Cablul Romînesc route was closed. That year began the decline of the tram in Ploiesti. In 2003, the mayor Emil Calotă decided to shut down the Armoniei ↔ Uztel line. The Maternitate ↔ Uztel section should be retained. For this reason, the operation of the tram lines 104, 106, 107 and 28 was discontinued in 2003 and bus lines with the same line number were set up. In the same year, eight used Tatra KT4D tram cars were acquired from Potsdam .

The year 2009

In 2009, Mayor Andrei Volosevici planned to shut down line 101. On April 29, 2009, a public debate on this plan took place in the town hall. In less than ten minutes there was a scandal, as this decision made the residents of Ploiesti angry. The debate was postponed to May 6th. The debate on May 6th was canceled and the mayor assured that tram line 101 would be refurbished with European funds.
