A radiation transfer model is a mathematical model which can be used to simulate the reflection , transmission and absorption processes of an object.

Applications

Radiation transfer models are very often used in remote sensing . A distinction is made between two basic applications:

  • direct mode
  • inverse mode

In direct mode , for example, the spectral reflection properties of an object are simulated in order to define spectral channels that enable optimal detection of the most important object properties. In this case one would speak of a sensitivity analysis .

In inverse mode , measured reflection properties of an object are used to determine the parameters of the radiation transfer model (and thus the object characteristics). In this case one speaks of a model inversion .

In addition to remote sensing, radiation transfer models are used in other areas, for example planetology , meteorology and climatology , but also in industrial applications.
