The Stralsund was a German side paddle steamer and the first passenger steamship to fly the Stralsund flag .

The steamship association founded by Stralsund shipowners and merchants in 1840 commissioned the construction of a side wheel steamer at the A. & R. Hoppes shipyard in Newcastle upon Tyne . The steam engine was made by master engineer John Dunn Marshall in South Shields . The launch took place on February 8, 1841. On May 5, 1841, the Stralsund , whose wooden hull had been copper-plated, left for the first test voyage. During the transfer to Stralsund , for which the ship left Newcastle on May 19, the ship had to moor in Elsinore due to a lack of coal and therefore only reached the Stralsund port on May 24, 1841, one day later than planned.

After a few test drives, during which, among other things, a sailing ship was maneuvered, the first journey with passengers from Stralsund to the port of Lauterbach near Putbus and back took place on May 31, 1841 . From June 3, 1841, the Stralsund operated twice a week on the Stralsund – Stettin steamer line . In addition, excursions “around Rügen” and trips to sea were undertaken and maneuvering services were performed.

In 1850, the Steamship Association sold the ship to the Stralsund shipowner AT Kruse. From him it went to the shipowner and royal Belgian consul Johann Heinrich Bartels who sold it to FA Spalding & Sohn in 1857, both also from Stralsund. In 1859 the Stralsund was canceled.

With two steam engines driving two side wheels, the Stralsund reached a speed of around 7.5 knots . The load capacity was 46.8 tdw , which corresponded to 36 old Prussian normal loads . Only a few small cabins and a luggage room were available for the 150 passengers.
