The beach Hooksiel (also North Sea beach Hooksiel ) is a man-made beach in Hooksiel in the municipality Wangerland in Lower Saxony . The beach is located between the Hooksieler campsite and the Hooksieler outer harbor, mainly on the sea-facing side of the headland between the North Sea and the Hooksieler inland deep . This gives the visitor the impression that the beach is on a kind of spit .

description

The beach in Hooksiel has the areas textile beach, nudist beach and dog beach. Somewhat spatially separated is the beach area of the Hooksieler campsite in the far west. Except for this area, the beach sections mentioned are not spatially clearly separated. The sandy beach is around 3.5 kilometers long and between 50 and 70 meters, only up to 150 meters wide in the area of the campsite. This is followed by a strip of meadow around 150 meters wide. This makes Hooksiel beach one of the largest beaches on the East Frisian Peninsula . The beach is bordered inland by a dike . Immediately behind the dike there is a nearby access road, Bäderstraße, with several parking spaces.

During the bathing hours the beach is supervised by swimming officers. The beach is on the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea , so bathing and swimming are dependent on the tides . At low tide , the sea water retreats several kilometers.

Tourist importance of the beach

Since the closure of the Genius Beach near Wilhelmshaven , Hooksiel Beach has been the sandy beach closest to the city of Wilhelmshaven. Due to the convenient location to the nearby A 29 motorway and the free parking facilities close to the beach, the beach is very attractive for day and weekend tourists from southwestern Lower Saxony, Bremen and parts of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Tourist facilities

There are two beach buildings on the beach, each with a kiosk / fast food restaurant, toilets, and shower and changing facilities. Entertainment options are offered during the bathing season. Outside the marked bathing areas, normal beach activities such as sailing, surfing, boating (including motor boats) are permitted. As usual on the German coast, beach chairs are rented out on the beach . There are fish restaurants in the area of the directly adjacent Hooksieler outer harbor.

Controversy over free beach access

As is common on the German North Sea coast, an entrance fee is required for access to the beach. Use of the parking spaces near the beach is free.

In 2012, the citizens' initiative “Free Beach Access” was committed to “entering the open landscape”, as the initiative believes is regulated in the Federal Nature Conservation Act, i. H. free access to the beach was requested. In the spring of 2012, the initiative attracted media attention: first at Easter with around 20 people and at Whitsun with around 300 demonstrators on the beach for free access to the sea. In the following weeks, the initiative remained active - so it symbolically raised a forest fee in the Upjever Forest and distributed leaflets in the region. During the 2012 season, the Wangerland municipal administration gave way and partially dismantled the barbed wire on the beach fence after the initiative had made a comparison with the former zone boundary.

The municipality of Wangerland was considering not charging an entrance fee for entering the beach in the future, but instead introducing fees for the parking spaces. This is rejected by the initiative and other critics, however, as it is de facto only a formal shift of the existing entry regulations. For the 2013 season, the existing rules initially remained. In January 2016, the Lower Saxony Higher Administrative Court in Lüneburg ruled that the residents of the neighboring communities were not entitled to free access to the beach. (Ref .: 10 LC 87/14)
