Frankenthal lido

The lido , which is also spelled StrandBad in some pronouncements , is the open-air swimming pool in the town of Frankenthal in the Upper Palatinate ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). It is accessible all year round, including outside the swimming season, and has 200,000 to 250,000 paying visitors a year.

Geographical location

The outdoor pool is located southeast of the main town in the tub On Siegfriedbrunnen within the right angle, the there the running first north and then east B9 forms. The site is closed off in the east by the Isenach river , behind which the border to the Edigheim district of Ludwigshafen runs. There is a mini golf course to the north of the lido and a tennis facility to the south-west .

The facility can be reached via the streets Meergartenweg and Am Strandbad , where around 1,400 cars can be parked in five parking spaces. However, visitors from the surrounding area mostly come by bike.

investment

There are several bodies of water on the 168,000 m² open-air area, which is laid out as a park and which also includes the green former garbage dump in the southeast, popularly known as " Monte Scherbelino ". The two largest, connected Paul Schmidt ponds are designed to be close to nature . They extend over 300 m from west to east and together have the shape of an eight; the larger western one is also called a bathing pond , the smaller swan pond . To the south of the bathing pond there are water basins made of concrete. The lap pool is 50 m long and 21 m wide and has an average depth of 1.80 m; it thus meets the requirements of a competition venue. Directly southeast of it is the non-swimmer pool , which has the shape of an irregular hexagon and is between 0.80 and 1.20 m deep; it features a water mushroom. The double slide was dismantled at the beginning of the 2013 season. A small teaching pool and the children's paradise , which includes a 10 to 30 cm flat paddling pool with an elephant slide and a meadow with play equipment , are located even further south-east .

The lido is a popular leisure destination even when there is no bathing, the "park season"; entry is then free. The large park is ideal for walks, and families like to use the various playgrounds. In 2012, a “parkour” facility was installed for recreational sports, which is comparable to a fitness trail .

history

Frankenthal's first public bathing establishment was located in the south of the city, An der Postbrücke , which crossed the Isenach, and consisted of a pond-like extension of the river. Since the watercourse at that time was still used as a sewer for the municipalities located above, it showed increasing pollution with the advent of industry. That is why the city expanded the two Paul Schmidt ponds from 1929 onwards. These were the sound - open pit of brick Paul Smith and Son emerged that its operation shortly after the First World War had set, and were first used in winter Skating rinks.

The redesign of the large pond by hand by around 100 people lasted until 1934, the small pond was already largely left in its natural state.
