Ostrich (heraldic animal)

As a common figure, the ostrich is a heraldic animal that is not very common in heraldry .

To distinguish between herons , cranes and storks , the ostrich is depicted with a featherless neck and an exaggerated feather tail. The main distinguishing feature is the horseshoe held in its beak . This peculiarity stems from the medieval superstition that the ostrich can eat and digest iron or stones.

The coat of arms in Strausberg near Berlin is well known. Here she is also talking on a mountain of three . Many families with the name Strauss / Strauss use the heraldic animal in the same way.

The ostrich feathers are popular as a shield image and in the upper coat of arms . The Prince of Wales has the feathers in the badge . There are also three feathers instead of tower flags in the coat of arms of San Marino .
