Strawberry is a census-designated place of Gila County in the US state of Arizona .
geography
About 20 kilometers southeast is Payson , Big Park is about 50 kilometers northwest behind a mountain range, the city of Phoenix 120 kilometers southwest. The Arizona State Route 87 and Arizona State Route 260 pass through Strawberry. The Tonto Natural Bridge State Park connects directly to the south.
history
The place got its name because of the many nearby wild strawberries (English Strawberry ). The oldest school building in Arizona from 1884 is still preserved in Strawberry.
Because of the nearby Tonto Natural Bridge State Park with various trekking opportunities, tourism is becoming increasingly important for the city.
Demographic data
In 2010 a population of 961 people was determined, which means a decrease of 6.5% compared to the year 2000. The average age of the residents in 2010 was 60.5 years, which is significantly higher than the average for Arizona of 37.1 years and indicates that the place is often used as a retirement home for retirees. 24.9% of Strawberry residents have German ancestors.
