history

Strebersdorf originally belonged to the parish of Stadlau . In 1541 the place was parish from Kagran to Stammersdorf . This made the Stammersdorfer local cemetery the responsible burial cemetery for the residents of Strebersdorf. Most recently, the dead were buried in the cemetery that was built in 1833 together with the Stammersdorf community. On October 21, 1877, the Strebersdorf community decided to build its own local cemetery due to the distance to the previous cemetery. From 1878 the deceased were buried in the cemetery; the consecration took place on August 13, 1878. The property had a small chapel and was open to the deceased of any denomination. The cemetery cross was donated by the family of the “landowner” Traxler .

The cemetery was expanded for the first time in 1892. Further enlargements were made in 1902 and 1910. After the incorporation into Vienna, the cemetery had a size of 5,184 square meters. It was already fully occupied in 1910 and at that time only intended for Catholics. For this reason, from 1911 onwards only graves, family graves and individual graves of first and third class were allowed to be carried out; for individual graves of third class an extension of the right of use was no longer possible. In 1917 the allocation of family graves was also stopped. The construction of a residential building symmetrically to the death chamber approved the Vienna City Building Office in 1914. Due to the constant lack of space, the Vienna City Council imposed a stop on the allocation of new graves in 1923. However, at the request of the population, the decision was reversed and part of the cemetery was reopened for new occupancies.

In 1926 the local council had a new morgue built, the urgently needed expansion of the cemetery took place in 1959 and 1979. In 1965 the graves of the school brothers received new crosses and tombstones based on the designs of Professor Brother Georg Schill . The new construction of the funeral hall started in 1998 and was consecrated on May 16, 2000. The architect Christof Riccabona took over the planning , the glass windows and the altar wings were designed by Helmut Margreiter . The floors, the altar table as well as the urn and tumble table were made of Carrara marble and glass. Thonet armchairs were used for seating, and nickel-plated brass was chosen for the lighting.
