The Streitberg , formerly also called Warßberg , is an 88 m high elevation in the south-eastern part of Braunschweig . The Streitberg is part of the Viewegsgarten-Bebelhof district .

history

The origin of place names Streitberg and Warßberg is unsettled. The name Streitberg is documented for the first time on a map from 1782. At that time there was a “ pleasure house with a garden”. Over the centuries, the parcel went through numerous changes. 1831 should be on the mountain a mulberry - plantation have been. In 1866 "summer apartments" were mentioned there. Today the elevation borders directly on Helmstedter Strasse in the south and the main cemetery in the east, and in the north-west on the tracks of the main station, which was inaugurated in 1960 .

Fort St. Leonhard

The Streitberg was part of the eastern fortifications of the city of Braunschweig . On top of it was the Fort St. Leonhard , which consisted of a block house and a traverse .

Excursion restaurants

In 1867 Julius Naacke was given permission to open a pub there. In 1869 their landlord was called Töpke, in 1871 Osterloh. After the First World War , the restaurant with garden terrace "Zum Streitberg" opened.

Streitberg brewery

In 1870 the Braunschweigische Actien beer brewery Streitberg was founded on the site. Although the Actienbrauerei had one of the largest and most modern beer production facilities in the city, it had to give up after the end of the First World War . In 1920 the Braunschweiger Aktien-Bierbrauerei Streitberg was incorporated, which was associated with a renaming to the Feldschlösschen -Streitberg AG brewery . The old buildings were then used by the Braunschweiger Malzfabrik AG.

In the following decades the tenants and owners changed often. Among other things, there was a gardening shop, a factory for roofing felt, a juice press, a shipping company and a construction business. Some of the buildings of the old brewery were still standing in the 1950s. During the Second World War , the cellars of the brewery were used as air raid shelters and the buildings were used as accommodation for refugees and bombed-out people. It wasn't until Helmstedter Strasse was redesigned in the late 1950s that the brewery buildings were demolished.

Streitbergschule

In 1960, the Streitberg elementary school was opened as an alternative school for the students of the Ottmer School . This was demolished in the course of the large-scale redesign of the area between Augusttor , Augusttorplatz (today's John-F-Kennedy-Platz ) and the new construction of Kurt-Schumacher-Straße as a connection between the Braunschweig main station , which opened in the same year, with the Braunschweig city center . The elementary school , later the primary and secondary school in Streitberg , existed until it was closed due to the sharp decline in the number of pupils in 2003. Until 2008, the buildings were temporarily used by the Gauss school. Today the International School Braunschweig - Wolfsburg is located there .
